Bobbin Lace

DSC01477.JPG

For my thesis project, I took bobbin lacemaking classes taught by Karen Hickman with the Austin Lacemakers Guild. She introduces her students to the process by guiding them through 5 bookmark exercises before they select their own projects.

I wanted to embellish my hand sewn 18th century shirt with bobbin lace on the bosom ruffle. The pricking, or lace pattern I selected is from an early 20th century magazine called El Consultor de los Bordados. I used Egyptian cotton thread and worked on the 40" piece for approximately 100 hours.

I am so grateful for Karen Hickman's endless patience, expertise and generosity and I had such a lovely time getting to know my wonderful classmates.
